Le 1er European Blues Challenge en mars à Berlin fut l’occasion pour les membres suisses de l’EBU de se réunir et de lancer cette année le 1st Swiss Blues Challenge, dont la finale se disputera en live au BAG. Le groupe de blues vainqueur de ce concours pourra représenter la Suisse au prochain European Blues Challenge (EBC) qui aura lieu à Berlin les 17 et 18 mars 2012.

Un jury formé d’acteurs de la scène blues suisse fera une première sélection sur CD ou mp3 et les 4 meilleures formations désignées seront invitées à disputer la finale au BAG à Genève le 29 septembre 2011.

La date limite pour l’envoi du matériel audio est le 13 août 2011*.

We just returned from playing the world’s coolest blues festival, BLUES RULES in Crissier, Switzerland. It’s eclectic, but has a real concentration on dirty hill country and Delta electric blues, and alt variations on the genre. Unlike most other festivals, fans and bands get to enjoy the music and fantastic surroundings – the festival is set on the property of a small castle in a mountain pasture. The musicians dine together and drink together on the grounds above the quaint old section of a Swiss village.

Scissormen have played BLUES RULES before, although this was Matt’s first trip. The band cut BOOTEG LIVE: Blues Rules 2010, Crissier Switzerland here on stage last year, so it was a pleasure to return to our friends and fans in Crissier. (Shout out to Thomas, Vincent, Lucie, Jean Luc, Michel, Lana, Wes, Nof-Nof, Vonda, Raph, Marcus, etc.)
There were plenty of musical highlights. A typically rollicking set from Bob Log, killer wild-ass punk blues from Rev. Deadeye and his crew, two sets from Hillstomp — a duo I’ve wanted to see and meet for a while, a bone chilling opening “Ramblin’ Man” (Hank, not Duane) from Chapel Hill, a long overdue reunion with Kenny Brown (who dug deep into the Callicott/Burnside repertoire on stage), a surprising introduction to fiddle and banjo madman Joe Troop, Eric McFadden’s ripping set, and listening to and hanging out once again with Wes Mackey — die-hard Carolina bluesman who now rules the roost in Vancouver.

After a 20-hour trip from Nashville we grabbed a 45-minute nap and traveled to a pre-festival showcase in Geneva sponsored by the Blues Association of Geneva and featuring Scissormen, Kenny Brown, Rev. Deadeye, Hillstomp and Joe Troop in short sets. (Thanks to Chris and the BAG gang for welcoming us a second year.)

The festival itself started with my slide guitar master class, a half-hour session on the history and basics of playing slide, in front of the main stage. Thanks for Floyd of Floyd Beaumont and the Arkadelphians for his excellent translation. To my surprise, about 50 people continued on to a side tent with me when our allotted time was over for about a half hour more of conversation and performance, but I made sure to finish before Hillstomp took the main stage for a walloping set.
Scissormen dumped coal on the fire Saturday, the festival’s main day, in a slot that kicked off the evening’s program. Matt played like a monster, or maybe the Manster, as we busted out a mix of traditional blues and new original tunes. To be in Switzerland seeing a festival crowd dancing and singing along to “Whiskey and Maryjane” was inspiring, humbling and delightful. We could have played for another two hours!
Matt did double duty, also playing drums with Wes Mackey. Wes is a smooth guitar player and storyteller who also plays bass pedals while he sings in a warm worldly voice. He is a well-loved figure in Crissier, as he’s written a song about the festival. And he’s great in general – a really good artist and raconteur, very funny, with a big heart. I love the guy!
It was a pleasure to be invited back to the festival’s concluding All-Star Jam, too. At one point there were at least five guitarists on stage including Kenny Brown, Hillstomp’s Henry Kammerer, Eric McFadden, great guitarist and big-hearted guy Lubos Bena (of Lubos Bena and Matej Ptaszek – an amazing duo inspired in part by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee), and me. It was a blast to trade slide licks with Kenny again, burn guitar and trade vocals with Eric on “Baby Please Don’t Go,” all with Matt on drums. “When the Levee Breaks” was chaos, but fun, and the very end of the festival left Wes, Matt, James Whiton on bass (from Eric’s band) and me onstage supporting Wes as the crowed through “Little Red Rooster.” Meshing with Wes, who I respect and enjoy, put me on a cloud as the stage lights dimmed for the last time. What a blast and a great memory! We closed it out old school, for real.

The next day was a post festival day off, so we all got to share two more excellent meals with the promoters and their families, and the remaining musicians and crew. Matt, Alex from Rev. Deadeye’s band, Joe and me got a lift into Lausanne to see Lake Geneva and the tourist area on its shore, with snow capped mountains towering on the opposite side. And after another hang at the castle, we folded early for our 4:30 a.m. wake-up call and the long journey back. But not before Wes and I got a chance to mess around with guitars a little.

Being able to experience a festival like this and days like these, and to get to know people like the ones in Crissier who run, volunteer for and attend this festival make me feel good about being a musician.
